Welcome to ‘scout about’, our series exploring the small (but mighty) regional towns around the Gold Coast. In this instalment, we’re taking you on a walk down the palm-tree lined streets of Mullumbimby. Here’s how to spend a day there.
Why visit Mullumbimby?
Nestled in the Brunswick Valley at the foot of Mount Chincogan is ‘the biggest little town in Australia’. At least, that’s what they call themselves.
Although, with their burgeoning food scene, established hippie subculture and now-renowned wellness offering – all with a population of just a few thousand – we’re inclined to believe them.
You’ll find just about everything you need in Mullumbimby’s town centre (anything else you can probably find in nearby towns like Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads). Its weird and wonderful history – like the internationally-renowned Russian choir, for instance – can be explored through the painted murals, or by paying a visit to the Mullumbimby Museum.
Things to do in Mullumbimby?
If we were to pinpoint the start of Mullumbimby’s latest rise in popularity, we’d say it was December 2022. Why? That’s when The Banya, Mullumbimby’s own European bathhouse, first opened its doors. With hot, cold and magnesium-infused pools, a steam room and sauna, sun lounges and a food and drinks menu that will keep you there all day, there’s a lot to love about The Banya. It’s hardly a surprise that it took over Instagram almost instantly.
For another way to wind down, take a leisurely stroll along the Brunswick River. Described as the ‘lifeblood’ of Mullumbimby, this river is a popular spot for locals to canoe, paddle and fish. There’s always something to see.
Of course, there’s no therapy quite like retail therapy – and Mullumbimby has something for everyone. From gift shops and boutiques to op shops just waiting to be picked through, you could happily spend a morning exploring all that Mullumbimby has to offer.
Where to stay in Mullumbimby?
Your best bet is definitely an Airbnb or a house on Booking.com (Mullum River House looks nice, for example). There are plenty to choose from, and they’ll let you live like a local.
Alternatively, for a peak Mullumbimby experience, you could book a room in The Middle Pub.
Where to eat in Mullumbimby?
Speaking of which, Mullumbimby’s Middle Pub is the jewel in the town’s crown. Standing tall on Burringbar Street – the main street in Mullumbimby – the Middle Pub attracts locals and tourists at all hours of the day. Come for a classic pub lunch or knock off drinks, and you’re sure to be treated to delicious food, pub prices and a cast of colourful characters who will make your visit memorable.
Other must-visit spots to grab a bite (or a beer):
- Pink Lotus: A cosy Asian fusion restaurant in the centre of town. Book a table outside, if you can.
- Wandana Brewing Co.: A picturesque brewery overlooking a paddock out the outskirts of Mullumbimby proper.
- Mullumbimby Continental: A brand-new restaurant dishing up your favourite European pub fare.
- Baba Emma’s: Authentic Russian cuisine served out of a food truck. The pierogis are a must-try.
