It’s been a while since our last truly viral drink – cast your mind all the way back to 2020, when we were furiously whipping espresso and brown sugar together to make Dalgona coffee. So, when we saw strawberry matcha lattes start popping up on our feeds, we knew something big was coming.
Sure enough, they’ve taken the world (and the Gold Coast) by storm.
What are strawberry matcha lattes?
Combining refreshing strawberry and tasty matcha green tea, it’s little surprise that strawberry matcha lattes have taken off. Their photo-ready appearance (light green and vivid pink is an unbeatable combo) helps, too.
They start with a base of strawberry puree, a blend of frozen or fresh strawberries. Next, your milk of choice. Any will do. Finally, add some ice then pour over the matcha – a finely ground powder that’s made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves.
Sounds good, right?
Although they’ve been on the rise for a couple of months, now that they’ve hit the big time, we recommend you try a strawberry matcha latte as soon as you can. If they’re anything like other TikTok trends, they’ll be gone in a month or two.
Here’s where you can try a strawberry matcha latte on the Gold Coast:
- Shiro Gelato Snack: This slice of Japan in the heart of Southport imports its matcha directly from Kyoto, so you know it’s going to be good.
- Kefi Café: Eating your way through Kefi’s menu is like travelling the world – and their new strawberry matcha latte is Japan in a cup.
- O Bagel: No strangers to virality (their bagels can be seen all over TikTok and Instagram), O Bagel is officially dipping their toes into the matcha world.
