In this instalment, we chat to Allana Ford, CEO of the Gold Coast’s newest reformer Pilates studio, Muse Pilates – which officially opens on Monday October 14. Read on for your beginner’s guide to reformer…
How did you get into reformer Pilates? And when?
Before founding Muse Pilates, I experienced first-hand the benefits of Reformer Pilates after suffering from a knee injury and experiencing nerve damage after surgery in 2008. The low-impact movements played a key role in my recovery, helping me regain strength and mobility without strain. I became passionate about the power of Pilates and wanted to share its benefits with others, particularly those who might feel intimidated by traditional fitness spaces.
What do you love about it?
What I love most about Pilates is that it’s accessible to everyone, regardless of age, fitness level, or physical limitations. It’s a movement that empowers you from the inside out, helping you feel more in tune with your body. I also love how it strengthens the core and enhances mobility, making you feel both grounded and graceful at the same time. Plus, it’s a wonderful stress reliever!
Who should try this reformer Pilates?
Pilates is for everyone! Whether you’re a complete beginner, recovering from an injury, or an athlete looking to improve flexibility and strength, Pilates can be adapted to suit your needs. It’s especially great for people who want to build a strong core, improve posture, or find a low-impact workout that’s still incredibly effective.
What equipment do you need to bring? And what should you wear?
You don’t need to bring any equipment – everything is provided in the studios. Just bring yourself! As for what to wear, opt for comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. The only thing you need to bring is grip socks, which help with stability during certain exercises.
How many times per week should you do it in order to see results/improvement?
To see noticeable improvements, I’d recommend starting with 2-3 sessions per week. Consistency is key and within a few weeks, you’ll start to feel stronger, more flexible and more connected to your body. Over time, you can increase the frequency if you wish to see even faster progress. Something I love about reformer Pilates is how addictive it can be, so it’s easy to stay consistent. If you’re someone who is motivated by tangible results, then it’s perfect for you because within a short time, you can actually feel how much you’ve improved by increasing your resistance on the reformer. There’s never a shortage of ways to challenge yourself on this wonderful machine!
Is it social?
Absolutely! Pilates classes are not just a workout – they’re a vibe. You get to sweat, laugh and connect with a whole community of people who are just as passionate about moving and feeling good as you are. It’s not uncommon to see friendships forming over Reformer machines or people grabbing a coffee after class. Whether you’re cheering each other on in class or chatting about your progress afterwards, it’s a supportive, uplifting environment that makes working out something you actually look forward to.
How much experience is needed before the first class/session?
No prior experience is needed at all! Pilates is very beginner-friendly, and our instructors guide you through each movement with clear, supportive instructions. Before each class you are asked if you have any injuries, so don’t let a stiff neck or trick knee stop you from starting – our trainers are excellent at providing alternate options for all levels and capabilities. Come as you are and we’ll take good care of you! We also offer beginner classes focusing on mastering the fundamentals, so you’ll feel comfortable and confident from day one.
What are the long-term benefits?
The long-term benefits of Pilates are incredible. It improves strength, flexibility, and balance, but it also helps prevent injuries, enhances posture, and promotes overall body awareness. Mentally, it reduces stress, boosts confidence, and improves mindfulness.
What would you say to someone who is interested in this reformer Pilates, but scared to try it for the first time?
I would say, “Take the leap!” Pilates is designed to be adaptable, so every move can be modified to match your comfort level. Our instructors are there to support and guide you, and you’ll quickly realise how much your body is capable of. Trust yourself – you might surprise yourself with how much you enjoy it!
